Dog Publisher Seeks Unpaid
Advisory Editors for Magazines & Annuals
We are publishers of outstanding dog magazines (see Dog
Magazines), dog annuals (see Dog Annuals)
and dog books (see Dog Books). We are seeking
Advisory Editors (this is an unpaid position) in breeds in which we do not
have an existing magazine or annual (or, in a few cases, have discontinued
an annual or magazine in the past). We are multiple winners of "Best
Single Breed Magazine" and our publications have won many other awards.
Compensation must be "psychic" as our circulations are normally
very low (typically 1000) and cannot justify paying editors or writers.
We have had many people who have helped us as advisory editors for over
a decade. They gain recognition in the breed (though few of them need it)
and the knowledge that they have helped to make the breed better through
the dissemination of good information.
We like Advisory Editors to have long experience in the breed and who are
personally acquainted with most of the "major players." We prefer
somone who has been going to the National Specialty for years. We prefer
someone who has extensive experience with breeding, showing, and other aspects
(be it lure coursing, obedience, field training, etc.) of enjoying a breed.
This position does not take much time on an annual basis, but is a very
important position. Like a rudder on a ship, the Advisory Editor guides
us on our journey to provide an outstanding publication in a particular
breed. Our magazines have several features that have come to be known as
our "signature:"
1. An in-depth breeder interview each issue.
2. A centerfold of a great dog of the past.
3. Regular columns by knowledgeable breed people.
4. Coverage of the specialties within the breed (including results and photos).
5. A breeders' directory (free to paid subscribers).
6. Special features.
7. Rankings of the top dogs in conformation and obedience. Rankings of top
breeders and top producers.
We believe in magazines that containt a lot of "meat" or content
and are not just picture books. Our magazines contain, on average, over
45,000 (!) words of content in each issue. We have been dog publishers for
over 20 years. We believe our magazines should celebrate the breed it's
about - and be a constructive vehicle for those in the breed where important
topics of the day can be discussed.
The Advisory Editor makes ALL the difference between a really successful
magazine and one that isn't so successful. We like the Advisory Editor to
help with:
1. An annually updated list of about 30 people (with phone numbers, a brief
writeup, and a priority) of who we should interview in the breed. This should
be an "unbiased" list.
2. A list of people we should ask to write regular columns. We like to have
bloodline and geographic divergence. We have a few writers who have been
writing for us for 20 years, but a few sometimes fall out and need to be
replaced.
3. A list (or furnish us with the name of someone who can function as our
Centerfold Editor) of dogs we should feature for the Centerfold. These are
deceased dogs who have been important (for different reasons) in the history
of the breed. We need the name of the dog and the name of the person who
could provide us with a 3-generation pedigree and writeup on the dog (or
bitch).
4. Occasional help on other matters which might come up. One person at Hoflin
Publishing would be our internal editor who the Advisory Editor would work
with on a regular basis.
5. Yearly updated parent club list.
Everyone wants a magazine, of course, instead of an annual. We prefer ourselves
to do magazines, but can only justify doing them in breeds where it is likely
that the paid circulation will exceed 500. Before making a decision, we
consider what other publications (if any) there are in the breed, the history
of publications in the breed, the point schedule in various areas of the
country, the annual AKC registrations, and the interest the breed owners
exhibit.
If you have an interest in becoming an Advisory Editor, please email Don
Hoflin (donh@hoflin.com) or Cindy Kerstiens (cindyk@hoflin.com). You may
call Cindy at 303/420-2447 7:30 to 3:30 M-F Denver time. Cindy is our internal
editor for many of our magazines and has been with Hoflin for over 15 years.
Thank you for your consideration.
